The main difference between a personal trainer vs. a fitness instructor gives personal training a distinct advantage over fitness instructors. Personal trainers build a strong relationship with their clients, work with your goals to create a customized exercise plan to help you reach your goals, provide support throughout the exercise process, and offer ongoing advice if necessary. A fitness instructor only works with you one-on-one through a doorway, works hard to help you reach your goals, but does not offer continued support or guidance. When choosing a personal trainer, make sure they fit these requirements.
It is important
that you feel comfortable and confident working with your trainer. He or she should be willing to listen to your concerns and offer constructive feedback in a supportive, non-judgmental way. The fitness instructor may have a lot of tricks up their sleeve, but it’s important to be able to open up and discuss concerns with your trainer. Also, don’t feel forced to use any of the tricks they suggest. The goal is to achieve your goals, not follow someone else’s program. As with all exercise science certifications,
certification requirements vary from state to state. Most states require Personal Trainers to obtain certification in at least one of the following five areas: nutrition and diet control, anatomy and physiology, anatomy and psychology, and group exercise and sports. It is possible to get certifications in more than one area, however, so if you are planning on working in a gym or fitness center, inquire about what specific programs the gym requires its trainers. If they do not require it, then it may be possible for you to pursue your interests and pursue a career as an Exercise Consultant or Personal Trainer.

are more along the lines of being an Exercise Specialist, there are many different positions available in this field. Some Personal Trainers handle rehabilitation or injured clients; Personal Trainers that handle individuals suffering from cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, or chronic pain; Personal Trainers that are certified in sports medicine; and Specialized Personal Trainers that focus on providing specific training for athletes or certain groups of people. If you are looking to become involved in the health and wellness field, there are many avenues available for you. Working as a Personal Trainer allows you to have something new and exciting to add to your resume each day.
